Plenary Discussion: What Can We Learn from Engagement Journalism?
What can we learn from Engagement Journalism?

One of the most interesting developments in journalism in the last few years has been a turning toward audience as collaborators and co-creators. Broadly defined as “engagement journalism”, we are seeing a host of experiments to break down walls between creators and audiences to build lasting relationships and different relationships between people and media institutions. The effort may seem like “Back to the Future” for some people in community media – which theoretically is devoted to meeting the information needs of local
audiences. That said, what can we learn, adopt or work with in this growing field? Are there willing collaborators in the field who want to “dance” with community media groups? Join us for a discussion of what’s possible.
Speakers: Andrew DeVigal; Jesse Hardman; Andrea Faye Hart
Moderator: Mike Wassenaar, ACM President & CEO
Andrew DeVigal is an Emmy-award winning visual storyteller and innovative
strategist who builds bridges by connecting ideas and people together to
produce meaningful, interactive, and engaging stories. He is the associate director of the Agora Journalism Center, the gathering place for innovation in communication and civic engagement, at the University of Oregon’s School
of Journalism & Communication.
Jesse Hardman is the founder and director of the Listening Post Collective, a national community journalism project run by the INGO Internews. Hardman reports for NPR and various print outlets, and helps run the L.A. based youth led community news outlet Boyle Heights Beat.
Andrea Faye Hart is a media-based organizer, social entrepreneur and interdisciplinary educator. Andrea is a Co-Founder and the Director of Community Engagement for the Chicago-based journalism lab City Bureau. Since 2011 she has designed civic journalism projects for media outlets as well as leading youth media organizations.

Ifanyi Bell is an award-winning visual storyteller and producer from Portland, Oregon. As an undergraduate at graduate of Hampshire College in Amherst, MA, and thought his early interest was in dramatic narrative, Ifanyi was significantly influenced by the school’s well-established narrative, non-fiction film program. After graduating, Ifanyi began his professional career in Boston, MA as an intern for Local Productions producing some of the earliest web-based video content produced for public media back in 2003. After leaving WGBH, Ifanyi initiated what would become a decade-long career serving a variety of PBS/NPR
stations across the country, helping to develop journalistic online video storytelling platforms and produce television and radio programs.
In 2014, he left public media and became the founder and co-creative director of Brushfire Creative Partners, a socially sustainable creative marketing agency dedicated to supporting and developing equity in the creative and social marketplaces that have become inextricably linked in the modern cultural and creative economy. It wasn’t until 2016 that Ifanyi Joined Open Signal where he conceived of his current initiative supporting an equity-based filmmaking Fellowship centered around developing the experience and expertise of local African-American creatives in the Portland.
In addition to his professional pursuits Ifanyi is an accomplished photographer, cyclist and father. (not necessarily in that order) He currently is based out of his hometown of Portland, Oregon.

Digital Inclusion and Community Media
Community Media has long been at the forefront of technology inclusion, initially teaching people how to use video cameras to have their stories told on cable TV. Yet many people are being left behind. How is community media addressing digital inclusion in today’s world? What are successful models for ensuring that technology is used as social inclusion?
